To celebrate
the 250th anniversary of Sterne's marbled page in Volume III of Tristram Shandy, which Sterne described as 'the
motly emblem of my work', 169 artists and writers were invited to design
the Emblem of their own work. Each contributor donated the result for an exhibition and auction to raise funds for
the Laurence Sterne Trust. Here is my effort.
I have a big cabinet full of old
magazines I use for collage. I counted 169 magazines down from the top of the
pile and 169 up from the bottom, then chose sections from the front cover of
one (a 1944 Illustrated) and the back cover of the other (a 1952 Picture Post)
to make the two sections of this motley picture."
